On 3rd November 1914, HM Submarine D5  was sunk by a mine in the North Sea not far from Great Yarmouth. Some reports say that it hit a mine laid by the German ship SMS Straslund while others state it was a floating British mine that had come adrift. Either way it resulted in the deaths of 21 members of its crew including William Dowsett. There were only 5 survivors.
